Welcome / Self Employment to Business Ownership
Wednesday June 22, 2022 - 9:00 AM

Nick & Jason discuss the past, current and future states of business professionalization in the painting industry and how the PCA is positioning itself to support the rising tide.

Jason Paris is a Minnesota native who graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in economics. His dream was always to pursue owning his own business, and while completing his business studies he was introduced to the painting industry through a college program where he managed painting crews and sales. After graduating, he was equipped with the skills and industry knowledge to launch his own painting business, Paris Painting, which quickly grew into an industry leader as an example of how professionalized painting businesses can excel and scale. Since then, Jason’s business ventures have continued to diversify into other specialty trades, informed by the skills he gained working in the painting industry. As a family man, Jason enjoys spending time with his wife and four children, participating in his local and church communities.

Jason’s ability to inspire support and friendship in those around him has spurred an active community of painters near his home in Minnesota, and he enjoys collaborating with others in the industry as well. Jason is a recognized leader in PCA, sharing his perspectives on effective management and supporting PCA’s initiatives with what has come to be known as his characteristic humble leadership style.

Business Modeling Through the Journey of Creating a Stable Asset
Wednesday June 22, 2022 - 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Many small business owners talk about the journey of professionalization and becoming more passive, but few get there. How do you actually do it? In this session we will walk through the journey from a Owner Operator Business Model (where your own active energy is making you money) to a Business Owner or Passive Investor Business Model (where your process, leadership, and investment is making you money).

The session will show you the proper financial models at the stages of 1M, 3M, and 5M+ revenues and provide you with guidance of when and how to lead a team to sit in All 5 Seats: Visionary, Integrator, Finance/Admin, VP of of Sales, VP of Opps. We will cover the concepts, and put them into action as you build a Annual Financial Plan and Accountability Chart for the next stage of your business during our workshop.

Alex Calof is a Founding Partner and COO of Aleph Holdings. Alex got his first taste of entrepreneurship running his own painting company in college where he found his passion for leadership and helping people be successful in their roles. For the last 12 years Alex has worked with small to medium sized business owners to recruit, train, and develop their teams to scale their companies into professionalized assets. Alex has been a Partner & President in Paris Painting from its 2.2M stage in 2018 to this years 10M plan. In 2019 a group of close friends came together to Found Aleph Holdings where we are active investors focusing on building assets in the trades and real estate. The portfolio scaled quickly from 3M to 20M+ consisting of Haven Builders - a business on the journey to be a 10M+ construction company, Paris Painting, Paperboy Marketing, & Aleph Ventures - a partnership group consisting of professionalized painting companies. In addition, we are active investors in 45M+ of multi family real estate development.

At home Alex is married, and just celebrated their sons first birthday! For fun his family enjoys being active - running marathons, boating, water & snow skiing, fishing, and plenty of walks as a family.

Painter Marketing --- How To Go From 10 Leads a Week to over 100
Wednesday June 22, 2022 - 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

We all want to get the most leads for the least amount of money. While being able to turn that lead flow up and down as needed throughout the year. Targeting specific types of leads (interior or exterior) through the process. Is that even possible? YES! Learn how to get in control your lead flow while spending as little as possible. I'll talk about what to spend, specifically where to spend it, and when to spend it. What tools I LOVE, and those that I wish I wouldn't have wasted my budget on. We'll cover everything from yard signs to referrals to mail to Google to Facebook to Angi.

Nate Streeter is the Director of Marketing and Customer Experience at Aleph Holdings. He spends 50% of his time overseeing the 4 in-house brands, their marketing assets, their customer facing tools, and their lead flows. The other 50% he spends in customer experience where he oversees the feedback loops from after estimate all the way through to the end of projects with the NPS and public reviews. Part of this includes escalations, and customer experience coaching.

He's come from a "paper route family" where he started as a paperboy at age 9 for the StarTribune News Paper, grew that with his family as a teenager to having some of the largest routes in the Twin Cities, then opened his own flyer delivery business which was recently acquired in 2020 by Aleph Holdings. Besides having delivered over 1 million flyers and newspapers door to door, he was able to grow Paperboy to one of the top 4% most profitable companies in it's class. Nate has a passion for North Minneapolis. He and his wife both grew up there, were high school Sweethearts, and now still live with their 3 teenagers.

Long Term Thinking - Financial Modeling and Succession Planning
Wednesday June 22, 2022 - 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

We all got into business with the idea of "owning my own company" and having our businesses serve our lives. As we set out with that vision, all too often our ambition of financial freedom becomes a reality of bondage to the ever growing needs of our business. As we close out our sessions, we will be diving deep into the shareholder mentality, how to move your company from an income stream to an asset in your life, what the valuation of your business may be, and how to think about exiting the day-to-day activities of your business. The goal of this session is to help all attendees define a clear vision for how they may one day exit their business to provide more clarity on the current focus and priorities to address in their operations.

Chet Funk is the CEO of Aleph Holdings. In 2017, Chet left his background in commercial real estate to partner in a small residential painting company in the Twin Cities - Paris Painting. Since then, Chet has led the formation of Paris Painting's parent company - Aleph Holdings - which has quickly scaled into a $20M+ in residential services. In addition to the portfolio of managed businesses at Aleph, Chet is currently leading the development of over $45M in multifamily real estate developments. At home, Chet enjoys the spontaneous travel to warm climates and time in nature with his wife and 3 children, along with the very recent addition of a puppy named Rolo.
